Statement on the Legacy of Chinese Canadians During the First and Second World Wars

As we come together as a nation to remember and commemorate those who fought and sacrifificed in the pursuit of freedom, I want to take this moment to recognize and honour the many hundreds of Chinese Canadians who fought for our nation in the First and Second World Wars.

Life at that time was very diffificult for Chinese Canadians, who faced harsh segregation in society, and were burdened by discriminatory laws and practices.

Yet despite this treatment, when the call to serve arrived during the First and Second Wars, hundreds of Chinese Canadians enlisted to serve their country, despite facing hurdles in enlisting due to their heritage.

Their heroic efforts on the battlefifield, and through acts of sabotage and espionage behind enemy lines in Southeast Asia, contributed to the allied victory.

Upon their return to Canada, this great generation propelled the advancement of civil rights, and helped secure their right to vote, and the repeal of the Chinese Exclusion Act.

Their bravery and heroic efforts, both on the battlefifield and in the halls of power, is referred today as a “double victory”, and it is because of their enduring legacy, that I today have the honour of serving Don Valley North as your Member of Parliament.

We stand on the shoulders of giants, and we will never forget them.

Spread the love
